1Purpose & the environment

Why this matters here. The Works are adjacent to SBR’s crystalliser ponds — a highly sensitive salt-production environment. A hydrocarbon spill or wind-blown contamination reaching the ponds could damage product and the environment. Strict prevention, containment and clean-up controls apply.

This procedure describes DTL’s methods for managing, storing, handling, preventing, containing and cleaning up hydrocarbon spills and other contamination, and for managing waste so there is no risk of contamination of the pond areas (SOW 7.8).

3Spill response

  1. Stop the source — shut off / upright / plug where safe to do so.
  2. Contain — deploy spill-kit booms/pads to stop spread, especially any path toward drains or the ponds.
  3. Notifyreport to the SBR site representative immediately, no matter how small (SOW 7.8), and to the DTL Supervisor.
  4. Recover — absorb and collect contaminated material into labelled waste containers.
  5. Clean up & dispose — remove contaminated soil; dispose lawfully; restock the spill kit.
  6. Record — raise an incident report (DTL-HSE-FRM-0001) and review controls.
Spill kits are maintained on site and on vehicles, checked and restocked; all personnel are briefed on their location and use at induction and toolbox talks.
